Find Work You Love: I work with women who are stuck in a rut at work and are looking for a career change. On the Motivation Monday podcast, I talked with Abigale Otchere about making the necessary steps to find work you love and I wanted to share those strategies here.

Where do you start?

The ladies I work with are so busy with everything going on in their lives that they rarely take time out of their lives for themselves. But what they really need is that quiet time to sit by themselves and ask important life questions.

Put a stop clock on your desk and ask yourself a question for five minutes. Once you start writing, don’t allow yourself to think too much. You might ask:

Where am I at work? Am I happy?

Where will I be in 5 years? Will I be happy with that or disappointed I hadn’t made more progress in something I really wanted to do.

What comes out is often quite interesting. It sparks ideas and options of what you can pursue. This is a fantastic exercise to use when you don’t know where to start.

What if you don’t know what you want?

So you know what you’re doing isn’t right, but you have no idea what is. The first step is to expand your options and start investigating things you enjoy doing. Look at your hobbies.

Some people love writing and an option for them is to sign up for a writing course to see if that’s something they want to do.

Open your eyes to what’s out there to see what you like. Explore what you’re interested in and what the world will pay you for.

What if you don’t have the confidence to make a change?

The reason why people stay so long in jobs they aren’t happy in is because they’re in their comfort zone and nothing changes when you are in your comfort zone. For ambitious women, that’s not enough. But confidence and self-worth issues get in the way. So many women think, “Who am I to be changing my career right now?”

Amy Cuddy has a fantastic TED talk about building confidence through the power pose. Before an interview, doing a power pose for two minutes really makes you feel more confident. Something as simple as putting your shoulders back and putting your head up high makes a difference.

Your self-talk makes a difference too. Watch what you say to yourself, turn any negatives into positives. Using these strategies can give you the confidence you need as you go in for an interview or reach out to a potential connection.

Is there such a thing as a dream job?

I wasn’t sure this was possible for myself, but now I 100% know it’s possible. Not only have I found a dream job myself, I also have so many clients who made the transition moving from something miserable into something they enjoy every day.

You know when something’s right for you when you get that buzz and that feeling of excitement.

How can you find gratitude in a job you don’t like?

When people are unhappy at work, they focus on the negative aspects. If you flip that and focus on the things you like including the location, your peers, a certain project, you’ll feel a lot better about where you are right now and you will draw in more of the positives.

For example, if your boss is the problem, think about the things you do like about him or her. That energy can bring out more of the things you like about them. This is a powerful tool to use for any area you dislike in your job. If you look for positive things instead, they will appear.

How do you face risk and make the change?

People come to me and say, “It’s so risky for me to even think about making a job change.” Yes, it would be risky to go in and quit on Monday morning. However, I never recommend that. Give yourself 3-6 months to develop a plan.

I help my clients spend time discovering what they want to do, narrow down their career themes, and pursue jobs and opportunities. By the end of 12 weeks, if you’re really focused on yourself and your career, you can be in a much better position with absolute clarity on your next career move.

To be successful, you need to be a person who makes stuff happen. Don’t just sit around and watch things happen. Take that first step to make things happen.
