Make Positive Changes To Your Existing Job

There are lots of ways in which you may be able to enhance or modify your current job to more closely match what you want. Here are some ideas for you to make positive changes to your existing job:

  1. Talk to your manager about your career development. Arrange to have a one to one with your manager and discuss what career development options are open to you. Following on from this, come up with your own action plan to develop your career.
  2. Ask about opportunities that stretch your current capabilities.
  3. Request a pay rise. Write out a list of all the reasons why you deserve a pay rise. This list should include additional responsibilities you have taken on, anything you have done which is above and beyond your job role, adding value in other ways. Keep adding to this list on a regular basis and then when you are happy that you have enough evidence, talk it through with your manager.
  4. Make sure you get credit or recognition for your work. Keep a folder where you retain all the evidence that shows you are doing a good job.
  5. Talk to your manager if you think your workload is too much. It is ok to talk about feeling overworked and to talk through potential solutions. You could suggest adding an intern or a graduate to the team or brainstorm other ways to lighten your workload. If no one knows how busy you are, then no one can help you.
  6. Be more assertive with your manager and your colleagues. You can tell people that you are making a conscious effort to make positive changes to your existing job.
  7. Manage your time more efficiently. Write out your to do list in the morning. Decide exactly what time you are leaving the office and stick to it. It is important that you have things going on outside work.
  8. Write a blog, organise an event or join a project group. Add value to the company that you are working for in a different way. This also helps to expand your network, as you never know what other jobs could come your way.
  9. Spend some time with other departments. Think about job shadowing or working on matrix projects to give you greater insight into the bigger picture of the company.
  10. Undertake in house training or train others. Take advantage of the training opportunities that you can get through work. Are there additional qualifications that you can get or day courses to attend. You can always find some outside of work and then suggest it to your manager and ultimately how it will help the team.
  11. Take control over your work/ life balance. See this article on the 5 Top Tips For A Work Life Balance.
  12. Ask for a coach or mentor, or mentor someone else. Find someone in your company who is successful and ask them whether they would consider becoming your mentor. The worst thing that they can say is “no”. Also consider hiring your own coach, if you want to progress then a coach can motivate and support you to push you to do more and achieve the goals you want to achieve in your career. Finally, be open to coaching others.

There are lots of ways to make positive changes to your existing job. I want to encourage you to pick a few of these ideas and put them into practice.

Remember that it is in your employer’s best interest to keep their current staff motivated and engaged as they are more likely to perform better at work. Is it time for you to stop complaining and make positive changes to your existing job?

Good staff are hard to find and expensive to recruit and train, so it makes sense for an employer to make an effort to retain the staff they want to keep.
