Reasons to Smile
One who smiles has a happy, successful life – Dalai Lama
What is a smile?
A smile is a facial expression formed primarily by flexing the muscles at the sides of the mouth, smiling is quite simply a sign of enjoyment. Smiling is a very natural response that shares our happiness with others.
If you smile, even if you’re are in a bad mood, it will immediately improve your mood, because the simple act of thinking about smiling and using the muscles is enough to trigger happy chemicals in the brain. In short, our brain feels good and tells us to smile, we smile and tell our brain it feels good.
Smiling triggers activity in your brain as there is a mind-body connection, in your left frontal cortex, which is the area of your brain that registers happiness.
One of the reasons we often feel happier around children is because they smile more. On average, they smile 400 times a day. Whilst happy people still smile 40-50 times a day, however the average person only smiles about 20 times.
Yearbook study
A famous yearbook study was performed which tracked the lives of women who had the best smiles in yearbook photos compared to the rest of their classmates. The results indicated that women who smiled the most lived happier lives, happier marriages and had fewer setbacks.
Practice smiling in front of the mirror
Stand in front of the mirror and smile. Practice to activate both your mouth corners and your eye sockets, this is a true smile. You will know whenever your smile is genuine, because you will immediately feel happy and relaxed. The power of a smile, even practiced in the mirror is that it can invoke happiness immediately.
More reasons to smile
- Smiling can make you happy: When you smile your body pumps out endorphins, so the next time you feel sad or upset, try smiling, it will immediately boost your mood.
- Smiling can make other people happy: Smiling is contagious. In fact, Louis Armstrong said it best when he said “When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you”.
- Smiling makes you more attractive: Do you ever wonder why you are asked to smile in photos? Quite simply, because people look more attractive when they smile.
- Smiling can lead to laughter: Smiling is the start of laughter and laughter is the best medicine and a mini workout for your abs.
- Smiling feels good: Have you ever found that smiling just feels good? Go ahead, smile now… you can’t help it, it automatically makes you feel good doesn’t it?
The moral of this blog post is to encourage you to smile more. Smile every time you walk through a door, you never know what the possibilities might be on the other side!
A smile is happiness you will find right under your nose
